Hello!

The SMALL Lab at Emerson College investigates how we speak and how we are heard. That is, we research speech motor control in the contexts that make up our day-to-day interactions with others. Because those interactions typically involve speaking to another person, we study not just how a speaker produces words, but also the listener’s role in communication—how they perceive speech and how they influence the speaker.

Our research spans different populations, but we are most often running studies with:

  • Adults with no speech, language, hearing, or neurological disorders
  • People with Parkinson’s disease
  • Adults with voice disorders
  • Adults seeking to modify their voice to align with who they are
